Join us for a chat by the fireside as two experienced educators discuss the benefits of service learning.

This fireside chat focused on the importance of providing service learning as part of a well-rounded education. It highlighted specific examples and offer tips for others who are interested in promoting student agency and supporting their communities.

Mark Beales, Principal at Osaka YMCA International School

Mark has been teaching internationally for 20 years in Thailand, Vietnam and Japan, where he is currently Principal at Osaka YMCA International School. He has helped lead numerous service-learning initiatives and a recent urban gardening project was recognised with an ISC Research International School Award. Mark is also a published author and has written for Lonely Planet, Cambridge University Press and The Guardian.

Ben Armstrong, Secondary School Principal at the Australian International School, HCMC, Vietnam

Ben has been teaching for 17 years and in senior leadership roles for 8. After starting his Mathematics and Physics teaching career Australia, Ben made the move internationally to Vietnam in 2012 where he has been ever since. At AIS, Ben has been able to grow a strong service learning community where both staff and students genuinely look for opportunities to enhance their local communities, ensuring a well-balanced, holistic education is taught and received.
