Luz María Gutiérrez Vittini

Former Director of Teaching and Learning at International School Basel

Following an exciting career dedicated to education, Luz María has recently (1 January 2024) retired, after nine years at International School Basel (ISB) in Switzerland, as Director of Teaching and Learning.

She started teaching in Chile, her country of origin, where she finished as High School Principal, before joining the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Switzerland, as MYP Manager and then Head of School Services, for Africa, Europe and the Middle East. In her roles at the IB, she supported schools and teachers, having the opportunity to delve into the world of international, national, private and state schools in the region and beyond. This gave her a good understanding of the challenges and opportunities schools face, supporting them accordingly.

Her experience at the IB, made her realize the need to practice what you preach and return to a school, to be part of a thriving learning community at ISB. During her years at ISB she engaged with teachers’ professional learning, led the school’s two re-accreditation cycles, developed in collaboration with teachers, the vertical progression of specific subjects to inform teaching and learning and launched, in collaboration with parents, students and teachers, the sustainability programme at the school.

Luz Maria is passionate about education and continues to be very engaged with the world of international schools and the role teachers play in school development and instructional innovation.
